Acupuncture Styles

At South Reno Acupuncture, Dr. Danchak practices three needling techniques, according to patients’ individual needs.  He is trained in Kotatama Japanese Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Acupuncture, and Tung-style Taiwanese Acupuncture.

Kotatama Japanese Acupuncture reflects a gentle view of energy, and features a very gentle needle technique using the finest, very slippery Japanese needles. The patient feels very little Qi (pronounced “chee”) or sensation at the needle point, but will feel energy moving throughout the treatment.

Traditional Chinese Acupuncture features a bi-lateral approach to needling (with stickier Chinese needles) and a more pronounced Qi sensation (a dull ache at the insertion point).

Tung-style Taiwanese Acupuncture uses a different set of points, most of which are located on the distal parts of the limbs (hands and feet). The needle technique can be much stronger—but Dr. Danchak will never go beyond your comfort level in eliciting the Qi response. There is no need to. Because all three needling techniques work.

Your preferences and your response to treatment will determine which methods will be used. Most of our patients at South Reno Acupuncture fall asleep during treatment, which lasts about 45 minutes.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion and stimulation of slender needles at known points on the body to clear and balance meridian or organ-level energetic imbalances (pain or disease).

The best evidence shows that acupuncture and herbal medicine originated in Europe in the late Stone Age. The Iceman of Otzi, a hunter, was found freeze-dried on a glacier in the Austrian Alps in 1991. He carried herbs (to treat intestinal parasites) in a leather pouch and had acupuncture points tattooed on this legs and back—located in the exact same places that we still find those points today. His body was carbon-dated back to 5,200 years ago.

Chinese Medicine, a system of health care used extensively by one quarter of the world’s population, has been in continuous practice for over 3,000 years in China. It has evolved into an extremely elegant and effective means of treating internal disease and musculo-skeletal pain.  It is based on each human body being a microcosm of the energy observed interacting in the outside world, as perceived and refined by hundreds of generations of Chinese medical practitioners.

About Herbal Medicine

The use of Chinese herbs in addition to acupuncture is the foundation of Oriental Medicine. They have been used together for 3,000 years. Operating a single herb pharmacy is the traditional way of practicing herbology. Busy practitioners sometimes opt for pre-mixed formulas, which don’t work as well as custom formulas. With a single herb pharmacy, substitutions and additions can be made. In pain formulas, a qi and blood-moving formula is used to clear blockages, and guide herbs are used to concentrate the energetic where it is needed most. There are specific guide herbs that can target a formula to the lower extremities, low back, back, neck, shoulders, upper extremities. Frontal, occipital and lateral headaches can all be specifically targeted with guide herbs.

Both herbs and acupuncture point prescriptions are chosen based on your diagnosis. Both serve to re-balance a system that is energetically imbalanced. Patients getting acupuncture and taking herbs at the same time get results more quickly. But Oriental Medicine is a dynamic system, and rules can be bent. Needlephobics can have been able to reduce or eliminate completely the need for acupuncture if they’re consistent about taking their herbs.

Herbs

Dr. Danchak uses only the finest Taiwanese herbs, all FDA approved, prepared by decoction (the traditional Chinese method) and then freeze dried into powder which you simply stir into warm water and drink. (Some formulas taste better than others.)

What is Oriental Medicine?

reno-hr

Oriental Medicine (acupuncture and herbal medicine) is an elegant, 3,000 year old art of balancing energetic imbalances (disease) by means of inserting and stimulating very slender needles at specific points on the body (acupuncture) and drinking specific herbal formulas known to balance meridian and organ level energy (herbal medicine). It is a natural, holistic approach to health that treats both the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.

Based on an energetic model rather than the biochemical model of Western medicine, acupuncture directly contacts the Qi (pronounced “chee”), or energy, that flows through your body and regulates it to prevent and resolve patterns of imbalance (disease). It helps the body heal itself and prevents recurrence of disease.
